3 Colleges and Their Choices on Tuition
MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY in East Lansing, the state's largest public institution.
What happened: In 1994, the university announced that tuition increases would not exceed inflation -- as long as state support for Michigan State increased by at least the rate of inflation. The university and the Legislature have kept their bargain each year since then. Michigan State's in-state tuition is now $5,210, a 3.5-percent increase over last year.
