2-Year College in Michigan Pays $175,000 to Settle Whistle-Blower's Lawsuit

Lansing Community College has agreed to pay its former general counsel $175,000 to settle a lawsuit that alleged he was wrongfully fired after he accused the college’s president of misspending thousands of dollars, according to the Lansing State Journal.

The Michigan college admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement, and its president, Judith F. Cardenas, said in a written statement that the college had acted appropriately in firing the former counsel, Tim Zeller, according to the Journal. The Michigan auditor general’s office has not issued a ruling on the alleged misspending, but Ms. Cardenas was cleared of wrongdoing by two audits requested by the college’s Board of Trustees.

Still, according to the Journal, the college has had to dole out a lot of money to former employees in the last year or so, including $36,000 to a former chief information officer and $388,000 to a former president. —Elyse Ashburn
