Move over, athletes. The scholars have arrived.
A little less than a year after a group of faculty members at major research institutions announced plans to establish the College Sport Research Institute, devoted to the study and scrutiny of college athletics, the group has released the first issue of its scholarly journal. The Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics includes several articles by scholars at institutions like Ohio State and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and tackles topics like academic reform and “corruption” in college sports.
But there is competition. A different publication, the Journal of Intercollegiate Sport, has also recently made its debut. This journal, which is published out of Penn State and received start-up funds from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, is in part the offspring of a colloquium on college-sports issues that the NCAA sponsored at its annual convention, in January.
Happy reading. —Libby Sander
