Two major labor unions in higher education, the American Federation of Teachers and the American Association of University Professors, will combine their efforts to organize faculty and staff members at public research universities, according to a news release from the AAUP.
Randi Weingarten, president of the AFT, cited budget cuts and “corporatization of the university’s research function” as evidence of the need for a stronger union-organizing effort. —Caitlin Moran
