Washington — Two historians will share the $1-million Kluge Prize, the Library of Congress announced this morning.
Peter Robert Lamont Brown, a professor of history at Princeton University, and Romila Thapar, a professor emeritus of history at Jawaharlal Nehru University, in New Delhi, will split the award.
Mr. Brown is on sabbatical to work on a book about the Roman Empire, a topic he has explored in earlier works such as The World of Late Antiquity (1971) and The Rise of Western Christendom (1995). He won early acclaim with a biography, Augustine of Hippo, published in 1967.
Ms. Thapar is the author of two books, A History of India, published in 1966, and Early India, a follow-up released in 2002.
The Kluge Prize is named for the billionaire John W. Kluge, who in 2000 donated $60-million to the Library of Congress. —David DeBolt
