1 in 3 British Universities Faces Operating Deficit, Survey Finds
One of every three universities in Britain expects to be operating in the red by next year, according to a survey by a government agency.
The Higher Education Funding Council found that the number of institutions facing an operating deficit had almost doubled in the past two years. Fifty universities are forecasting deficits for next year, compared with 28 in 1997-98. A report by the council said the figures "represent 30 per cent of the higher-education
